  4.     Do you worry that the U.S. has lost sight of excellence? We
  5. at TIME think we know where to find it. Over the past six
  6. months, as part of our College Achievement Awards program, we
  7. searched out 20 of America's outstanding undergraduate juniors.
  8. Together with the program's exclusive sponsor, Volkswagen
  9. United States, we sought to recognize and reward young men and
  10. women who have pursued their talents to the limit.
  11.  
  12.     Last week we brought the award winners together in New York
  13. City. We were astounded and somewhat awed by their
  14. accomplishments. For instance, all of 21 years old, Jennifer
  15. Spruill is not only a recognized expert in her field, she is
  16. creating it. A native of Pittsburgh and an anthropology major at
  17. Bryn Mawr College, she is researching the effect that cultural
  18. differences have in resolving conflicts. And at the University
  19. of California, Berkeley, Troy Wilson took the first direct image
  20. of DNA, the wonderfully intricate molecule that makes up our
  21. genes.

  23.     Remember David Eggar's name, because we know you will be
  24. hearing it again. What we don't know is whether it will be for
  25. playing the cello or the piano. A national prizewinner in both
  26. instruments, Eggar has also sung in 500 performances at the
  27. Metropolitan Opera in New York.

  29.     Moving along. If ever you get the chance to attend one of
  30. Melodye Stewart's workshops on African contributions to
  31. civilization, go. After 14 years as a corporate secretary, this
  32. dynamic mother of one returned to school and developed the
  33. courses in which she teaches that not all great things came
  34. from European minds. And keep an eye out for books by Luke
  35. Pontifell. He does not write them but prints them, beautifully,
  36. by hand. Last year his Thornwillow Press published Arthur
  37. Schlesinger Jr.'s J.F.K. Remembered, and in July he will bring
  38. out a book by Walter Cronkite on the first human landing on the
  39. moon.

  41.     Each winner received $3,000. But all of them have discovered
  42. a greater reward, the opportunity to be fully engaged in life.
